The morning light sparkled across a bed of fresh-cut trees. The day was normal, bright, sunny, an early morning, yet nothing our of the odd. It was a little breezy, and it was obvious that the day would grow warmer. A small squeak came from a gentle bush, but it was ignored. The scent of wood and mouse mingled, creating a rather sweet smell for the nostrils of a young cat. Like any other mid-sized apprentice, this feline was muscular and in great shape. Yet it was obvious that this cat didn't belong, instead she was out of the ordinary. But she was not just any cat that had once lurked in ThunderClan territory, she was the great granddaughter of Sedgestar, who had recently passed himself. He was her idol, the best cat she had ever heard of. Yet she had never known him. In fiction, and in reality, she had never got to look in his eyes and say Great grandpa, I love you. But she had gotten no glory from life.

Her life had been rather short, although she felt compelled to watch over her family with great care. She knew a lot now, and would take exceptional watch or Tigerpaw. He was so devastated by her death, he didn't seem to know what to do. She had been in so much denial for her own death, and how she had let down her family, she had to make it up to them, especially her older brother. She was jealous of his twin-ship with Gracepaw, and she had felt only aggravated by the fact that she was not in that kind of relationship with any cat. Yet she had died on accident, and had drowned in her own blood, alone. But her family missed her, and she had let down her own father. That cut her heart in half.

Minnow, named after a small fish. Named after her habit of shuffling dirt and springing in the air. Yet she was not the best swimmer, and her fight against death had shocked her so much. Her escape lasted seconds before she fell back under. Water had caught he and trapped it, it had chocked her. Blood had caught in her throat, and she had been so scared, so lonely. Minnow's pale ginger coat had been lathered in the water, and it had spread around her like paint. Her white underbelly had grown so cold, and her brilliant emerald eyes had faded. Her body had disappeared, and it might have seemed like she was alive, somewhere. Yet there was no chance of any survival on her part. Instead, Minnow had realized that her body was somewhere, in the forest territory, drowning, and wishing for air.

Now her flanks glistened with a brilliant starry shine, and she seemed so alive. StarClan was her home, but a single tear left her emerald eye. She was alone, hopeless, yet she had to speak with Tigerpaw. She had hurt him the most, and while she still wanted to say a goodbye to her father, Minnow felt hopeless. While she was in StarClan, she was incredibly sad, an incredibly hurt. Her death had made her so lonely she was confused beyond belief. Everyday since then, Minnow had wished that she could have another life, just to tell her father she loved him, and she would be there to watch him. But there was no way.

Minnow blinked into open space, noticing that light had flickered upon her shining starry flanks, but she did not even care to look up. While she was very understanding of other cats, she couldn't be of herself. Whether or not she did feel sympathy, she could do nothing. Oh Sedgestar help me. I'm so lost. Minnow pleaded, lowering herself into a ball, her tail swishing in front of her paws. Another tear passed her pale ginger cheekbone, but she only lowered her head. Silently, her ears flattened against her head, and she tried to breathe.

Minnow looked up, noticing how the trees swayed in the wind, and how her small frame lied there, almost unmoving. She yawned, exposing her white teeth, and lowering her emerald eyes again. She missed her father, and to talk to him would be wonderful. She had so much to say, but so little time. Eventually, she would have to go back to StarClan, and watch her family, alone, again. Though she couldn't help remembering her mother and father, looking at her, and Tiger, Crooked, Rain, Grace, and Dawn. They were her everything.

The morning air was warm and sweet, but it went completely unappreciated. If it had been bitter and unforgiving, it would have gone just as unnoticed to a muscular tabby tom. He found himself wondering aimlessly through the forest, all the more numb now than he had ever been before. Lately, he had been losing so much, it seemed. From his beloved mate, Sappyleaf, to his prescious daughter, Minnowpaw, and now he had lost his grandfather. It would seem as though StarClan was at its cruelest, but he knew that the forest would soon be ravaged... this wasn't the end.

Lionclaw had left the elders den just as dawn broke, after keeping vigil next to his battered body in respect. He found himself recalling the days of old, when Sedgestar had still been leader of the Clan, and how he had disappeared shortly after giving Lionclaw his warrior name. It had been a devastating blow to the Clan when the old leader left, but many of them knew that there had to be a reason. Sedgestar had always been extremely loyal and devoted to ThunderClan.

He made his way through the forest, numbed to the core. Emerald green eyes gazed unseeingly into the distance as he stumbled over rocks and tree roots, barely paying attention to the course that he was taking. The best time of his life was had when he was an apprentice, no cares, not a lot of others in his life to love ... where had those days gone? Perhaps love wasn't a blessing, but a curse in its own ways. If he had never fallen in love with Sappyleaf, it wouldn't have mattered if she lived or died, and he would not have to go through the pain of being a horrible father. But like it or not, he still would have lost Sedgestar today, he was just thankful that he had gotten to say goodbye.

Just as he had pushed his way through a thick bramble bush, a strange scent flooded his senses, sending chills up his spine. It was one which he had not smelled for a while, and now it seemed strange, almost alien to the large tom-cat. He followed it for a bit, stopping dead in his tracks when he found the source. It was a StarClan cat walking the land of the living, but not just any cat, it was his daughter, Minnowpaw. After staring in shock for countless moments, he got up the courage to speak, M-minnowpaw?

Daddy!

Her voice was young, and quite sweet, but hurt. She felt foolish, for a few instants. He looked so..frail, so...sad. Yet she knew he had held this up for so long, and now Sedge's death tore him. It was obvious that her father was much more hurt than he looked, but he seemed to ignore life itself.

I'm sorry daddy, I wish I could've survived. You have so strong ever since mother died, and now me and Sedgestar, I'm so sorry. I love you, Dad, a lot, but I wanted to see you, to tell you that I'm watching over you, and that I will always miss you. And that I love you. I'm sorry I can't be strong like you, Dad, you've been through much more than I have. The greatest lesson in life is realizing who you really are, and I learned that from you. Ever since I became your apprentice I felt bonded to you, unlike my other siblings, and I died..and left you without a goodbye.

Minnow swallowed, feeling herself dip her dead. Her emerald eyes widened, she knew she had gotten them form her father. She had always felt a bond between them, in a way, like a true father and a true daughter. She sniffed in her scent, her eyes peeling out in front of him as she shivered, unable to express the pain and guilt she felt inside. If only she could have brought Sappy back, but she didn't have the heart to tell her dad that she had been attacked by dogs, and almost killed. Wherever she was, Minnow felt guilty beyond belief. Whether or not it was her fault, she would always feel that pang of guilt and hurt. More so for Lion than any cat.

Lionclaw sat and listened to his departed daughter, for there was nothing else he could do. Even if he wanted to turn and run, his paws were rooted to the soggy ground, unmoving no matter how he tried. But he would never do that, he would never turn away from the chance to speak to a cat whom he had loved so greatly in life, yes, but also in death. He had never, and would never, stop loving this little she-cat, nor Sappyleaf, nor Sedgestar, nor any other cat he would lose throughout his life. If he was lucky, he would die before another loved one of his passed, but StarClan had not been so kind as of late. Life would only get harder from here.

Minnowpaw's words sent chills up his spine, her saddness and guilt tore at his heart. He hated to hear her so distressed, as she pinned her father's depression upon herself. It was no cat's fault, but those who decided the fates of those he loved. He understood that Sedgestar was almost ancient and it was way past his time, but his mate and kit were still young, he would never forgive his ancestors for taking them .. but in no way was it their own fault.

Minnowpaw, shhhh. He soothed, fighting to keep his voice from shaking. The tom felt the warmth of tears build up behind his haunting emerald eyes, but on his life, he would not let them fall infront of his kit. She was already feeling bad for him, and he didn't want to add to it by breaking down. I wish you had survived as well, as do your siblings, but StarClan has its own plan for all of us. You can't get around that. You always made me so proud, Minnow, and you still do. I love you more than you can ever know, never doubt that, and don't be sorry for things that you have no control over. I was lucky to have such a determined cat as my apprentice, not to mention a daughter.

He finished his reply with a glint of saddness in his eyes, something he had never let slip past his guard. It was good to see her again, however, it was as though he had finally gotten closure. It was not as though her body was found so that they could have layed her to rest, but now he knew she had made it to StarClan, where cats such as her belonged when they passed on.

Minnow breathed in, feeling her fur shiver. Yes, there was no way that she could have experienced the own site of her burial, but she knew now that her father would always love her, and always miss her. Even through it all, she knew she had pinned it on herself, feeling guilty for a crime she couldn't turn back, but nor was it even a crime. It was shame. Her death had scarred many cats, but she knew that if she hadn't died, she would have never known how much they actually did love her.

You're right, but I will always feel the guilt. I know now how much you love me, and that you cannot explain love. I have learned so much since my death, but still, I am honored, Dad, I have tried, but it was never good enough for StarClan. I want to tell you something, Dad, something that I have never told another soul, ever. Now I realize that...you have been the best mentor any cat can have. And even though I seem and feel sad, I know that it is best this way, and that StarClan meant for me to die. I'm here to watch you, and to be close to you. Like you did before, Dad, you watched me grow. And now it's my turn.

Her light ginger coat blurred for a few seconds, and she could hear a shuffle in the leaves. Suddenly, she turned, her wide light emerald eyes blazing upon a twitching thicket. But she knew it was only a mouse. Ever since her death, she had been so much more coordinated. Hurt, but convinced that it was the best way.

Dad, I want you to know something...mom is still alive. I don't know where she is, but I will tell you this, she is alive, somewhere past Highstones. I wanted you to know, never give up hope on her, please. I don't know if she will come back, but she still loves you very much.
